I was watching your Maker's Vise build and was curious about the insert you used to get a better finish. You said it was designed for brass & alumin(i)um, gave a very nice finish on steel, but wouldn't last long.
What kind of insert is it, and how did you know it would do this? My knowledge of inserts ends at "I found an insert shape decoder chart online."
I have zero hands-on machining experience but hope to change that someday.
Hi Kevin, it has a much higher rake angle at the cutting edge and is therefore sharper leaving a better finish, but the being sharper it breaks down faster in steel and doesn’t last very long, plus you can only take light cuts. I found this out through experimentation.
